Tigers fall short to Mocs

On November 9th the Tennessee State University’s Men’s basketball team fell short to University of Tennessee Chattanooga in their second game of the 2019-2020 season. The game took place in Chattanooga in McKenzie Arena. Going into halftime with a four point lead the tigers ended up scoring a total of 57 points while the Mocs scored 59.

The tiger’s offense was led by redshirt sophomore guard Carlos Marshall Jr. who scored 16 points. Marshall also led the team in scoring in their blowout win against Alabama A&M for the first game of the season in Gentry Center.

TSU now has an overall record of 1-1 and will prepare to take on Lipscomb on November 10th in Allen Arena at 7 o’clock. Putting last year’s overall record of 9-21 behind him, 2nd year head coach Penny Collins and his newly constructed team are determined to string up way more wins and will start conference play on January 4th.

They will play plenty of games in between now and then that should better help them prepare for the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). Collins goal is to make the Gentry Center the toughest place to play in the OVC.

Hydrate The Hood

This week I had the pleasure of learning about a business in the health and fitness industry called Hydrate the Hood by speaking to Mike Frazier. I was able to ask Mike a series of questions to understand his inspiration behind his business and to learn the benefits of his products.

Continue reading for the questions I asked and the responses I received from the entrepreneur himself, hopefully this article is an introduction to a healthier lifestyle for every reader to enjoy

Q: Can you tell me about the inspiration behind you starting your business?

A: First and foremost, I believe in entrepreneurship and having control of your life. I first started in February selling the PH9 generator to my peers and those who are into fitness, like myself. However, the sole inspiration behind Hydrate the Hood was when I was working in a local community center with senior citizens in an arthritis prevention program. One of the participants in the program was suffering from multiple strokes over a period of 4 months. It was brought to my attention that he needed help in managing his health. He was on heavy blood pressure medicine as well as the right side of his body was temporarily paralyzed.

So, I took it upon myself to help him. I gave him a PH9 generator and I advised him to drink a gallon of alkaline water a day in combination with a walk around the track three times a week as long as he could. For two months we did that and he came back to me one day and told me that his doctor took him off all of his medications. Since then, he has not had any strokes and he no longer needs his walking cane for assistance.

When he told me this it came over me as that I can use this to help people who are in this same situation. Just by changing someone’s water, I changed somebody’s life and that’s when Hydrate the Hood was created. My inspiration for having my own business was to find a way to live in my purpose and bring value and help to the community in the health, fitness, and overall well-being. The most significant message that was told to me was that there are two important days in your life: the day you were born and the day you find the reason why you are here on earth. Once I figured out what my purpose was on earth, I knew I had to give my all into it the blood, sweat, and tears. I know in the long run it will pay off with my persistence and a relentless drive to succeed.

Q: Who would you say is your target audience/ who are you trying to reach with your product?

A: I would say that everyone is a target. Our mission is to enlighten everyone on the benefits of alkaline water and the importance of adequate and efficient hydration. Education is our motor in this endeavor.

Q: What are the benefits of purchasing your product?

A: There are many benefits of Alkaline water such as it helps all the systems within the body by detoxing your body of acidity and the cancer cells in your body. You are making an investment in your health. Alkaline water also boosts your immune system and it gives your body more oxygen which enhances your central nervous system. You are also saving a lot of money from buying bottles water. The average American spends $1200 on bottled water. You can use the water out of your house, the fountain at work, and anywhere else that has drinking water and turn it into alkaline water with our ph9 generator. Lastly, you are providing a generator for someone in need. For every generator that is sold another will give to someone in the underserved community.

Q: What else do you offer or want to offer through your business?

A: I want to offer more education and knowledge about making healthy choices through nutrition and exercise. People need to know the importance of nutrition and exercise and how we can prevent a lot of health problems just through clean eating exercise.

Q: Can you explain to my what campaign you are currently doing?

A: Our current goal to close out the year is to sale 1000 cups and give away 1000 cups by December 31st. We want to start by getting involved in the local schools to provide for the students and as well as the teachers.

Q: So far how much support has people shown you for #Hydrate the hood?

A: We have gotten a lot support for Hydrate the Hood. Since we started the campaign back in March, we have had support from Inner City Investments (ICity) which is a non-profit organization in Nashville that very involved in the JC Napier community. The TSU women’s basketball team has given us support as well. We have supporters and ambassadors in Memphis, TN. My fraternity Omega Psi Phi has given me a lot of support as a great resource to get the campaign out and making purchases for themselves as well as for their families. One of our biggest supporters is Beyond the Diamond which is a baseball and softball training program in Nashville ran by Daryus Meriweather. His program has made an avenue to reach the baseball and softball industry with providing generators to the kids in his program as well as other youth baseball/ softball programs in the city.

Q: What are some goals you have for your business?

A: We want to continue to make a difference in the community. My biggest goal for my business is to get national exposure all over the country. With the momentum that has been created just in Nashville I know that we can’t stop just here. There is somebody in another city or better yet another country that we can help just as we did those here in Nashville.

Suspect in the death of Clark Atlanta University student had spent holidays at the victim’s home, a family spokesman says

0

By Darran Simon and Hollie Silverman, CNN

(CNN) — A Clark Atlanta University student accused in the death of her roommate was a close friend who had spent holidays with the victim’s family, a family spokesman said Sunday.

Jordyn Jones, who is one of two suspects in the death of Alexis Crawford, spent at least one Thanksgiving and Easter holiday with Crawford’s family over the past few years, the Rev. Markel Hutchins told CNN in an interview. Jones, who is from Michigan, and Crawford, who is Athens, started as freshmen together at the university he said.

On occasion, Crawford, 21, had referred to Jones, 21, as her “best friend,” Hutchins said.

“It was a regular occurrence for Jordyn to spend time with Alexis’ family and to engage with Alexis’ siblings,” Hutchins said.

He added: “To know that someone that they welcomed into home played a role in Alexis’ death is all the more hurtful.”

Crawford, who vanished from her off-campus apartment more than a week ago, was found dead in a park in nearby DeKalb County on Friday, Atlanta police said.

Days before her disappearance, Crawford filed a police report describing unwanted kissing and touching from another suspect, Barron Brantley, who is Jones’ boyfriend, police said.

One of the suspects led police to the body, Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields told reporters.

CNN has attempted to reach out to Jones and Brantley.

Crawford died from asphyxiation, Atlanta police said Saturday, citing the medical examiner’s office.

Brantley was booked into the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta on Friday. He is accused of murder along with three probation violations and “hindering person making emergency telephone call,” according to information from the Fulton County Jail.

Jones was booked Saturday and faces a murder charge, according to jail records.

Police haven’t released a motive.

Crawford was the third youngest of 10 children, Hutchins said. He said she was “really everything we want and expect our young people to be.”

Hutchins recalled one of Crawford’s aunt described her as “affectionate.” She would great relatives with a big hug.

Crawford’s family feels “overwhelming grief, and it is undergirded by a sense of disbelief,” Hutchins said.

He said the family is “obviously hurt and angry and devastated but what I’ve not heard is a sense of hatred.”

“There is no evident hatred or even animus towards Jordyn. What the family is focused on now, is Alexis,” he said.

These dog-like robots do backflips and play soccer. Yes, they’re adorable

0

By Bronte Lord, CNN Business

(CNN) — On a recent fall day at MIT, a group of players kicked around a soccer ball on the school’s Killian Court lawn. They ran around and jumped in piles of leaves. They even did backflips.

But these weren’t students, they were cheetahs. Mini cheetahs, actually. Oh, and they’re robots.

MIT’s Biomimetic Robotics Laboratory, which sits across the lawn from the school’s iconic main building, created these so-called mini cheetahs, four-legged robots that are powered by 12 motors.

They can run around untethered from cables, steered by nearby researchers using an RC-like controller. With the same basic dimensions of a Boston terrier and movements similar to that dog’s energetic, scampering gait, the silver robots are strikingly adorable.

“My hobby was watching cheetah videos on YouTube,” said MIT Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering Sangbae Kim. Inspired by the beauty of the world’s fastest animal, Kim challenged two of his graduate students, Ben Katz and Jared Di Carlo, to create a robot that can move as gracefully as the spotted African feline.

Ten years later, the team has created three versions of a larger cheetah robot in addition to the mini cheetah.

Unlike actual cheetahs, which have a top speed of up to 75 miles per hour, the robotic mini cheetah’ can run only about around 9 miles per hour. But both have what Kim calls “physical intelligence.”

“People don’t realize how difficult it is to stay balanced,” he explained. To keep itself upright, the mini cheetah has to make more 30 decisions per second, Kim said. That versatility, and resilience if it falls, are what make this robot special–and very good at backflips.

Teaching a robot how to jump in the air while turning 360 degrees wasn’t the hard part. Backflipping “is not actually more difficult than running, it’s actually easier,” Kim said. The real challenge was in the landing. After all, “if you cannot land, you cannot jump,” he added.

The robotics team is constantly creating new algorithms to teach the mini cheetah new skills. That’s why they recently built 10 more the robots and plan to send them to other university laboratories.

Working with the same hardware, the researchers will be able to share information and develop algorithms more quickly, Kim said. One particular skill they’re working on: climbing stairs. It’s a key advantage that a four-legged robot has over one that moves on wheels or tracks.

Kim said that robots like the mini cheetah could one day help with deliveries, elder care or emergency response, “anything that requires a human being to travel a distance and then do a specific physical action.”

But for now, He and his team are focused on adding skills to the mini cheetah. They’re considering adding cameras so the robots could navigate through space without someone operating them.

His ultimate goal, he said, is for the cheetah robots to “achieve the same level of mobility as animals… as good as a dog following you around.”

Vanderbilt’s Newest Commodore

0

There was a plethora of coaching changes in College Men’s Hoops this past offseason. One of the biggest changes is the change right here in Nashville, Tennessee, as Vanderbilt finally moved on from Coach Bryce Drew and brought in a new face to head coaching scene. That face is former college and NBA star Jerry Stackhouse.

Coach Stackhouse hopes to change the culture at Vandy, as the Commodores come off the worst season they ever had since 1948, with a record of 9 and 23, with 0 wins in conference play. Many were disappointed in what the Commodores didn’t achieve last season as they had a former top freshmen guard and now lottery pick Darius Garland, and top freshmen Simisola Shittu. Last season was supposed to be a coming out party for Vandy but things didn’t pan out. Vandy decided to move on to a new Athletic Director who came in cleaned house, starting with Coach Bryce Drew.

The new athletic director of the school made a surprising move by bringing in the former All-American Stackhouse to take the wheel of the ship. Vanderbilt has followed the path of other schools who decided to bring in former basketball stars. Stackhouse only experience coaching has been as an assistant for the Toronto Raptors and Memphis Grizzlies and Head Coach for the Toronto Raptors’ G-League affiliate, Raptors 905, were he won a championship and G-League Coach of the Year award. By hiring Stackhouse many hopes for a similar culture change similar to what happen at University of Memphis and Penny Hardaway.

Coach Stackhouse and Vanderbilt returns 5 players who played key minutes for the struggling Commodores last season, including breakout guard Saban Lee and Pre-season All-SEC team member Aaron Nesmith, who many believe is a positive piece Stackhouse can build upon. With the hiring of Stackhouse, Vanderbilt was able to attract former top-50 recruit, D.J. Harvey, who transferred from Notre Dame and post-man from Rice University, Quentin Milora- Brown. Along side the transfer Vandy welcomes four new freshmen including Dylan Disu, Scotty Pippen Jr., Jordan Wright and Oton Jankovic. The team hope these four young men can bring something great to the team.

Vanderbilt fans are eager to see what the new look Commodores would look like and hope that Stackhouse can bring a winning culture to a team and fanbase who begs for it. Experts believe the Commodores will finish among the bottom of the league again, as the SEC is tougher than ever, but they believe that Coach Stackhouse brings a new energy to the team’s atmosphere. I predict that the team will finish in the middle of the pack but nothing to surprising coming from them. I think Stackhouse has what it takes to get some hard wins from his team but like every new coach, he must go through his share of woes and adversities, before having winning seasons

Redhawks Defeat Tigers in Fly High Fashion Win

0

Nashville, TENN – The Tennessee state football team fell short of a victory yesterday in a 32-13 defeat to Southeast Missouri Redhawks Saturday afternoon at Hale Stadium. The Tigers are now (1-4) in OVC play and (2-7) overall on the season.

The Tiger’s got off to a very slow start against the Redhawks and was halted by the SEMO defense, turning the football over 3 times and finishing with a season low of 300 yards of total offense. The Tiger offense managed just 83 yards on 28 carries on the ground and 217 through the air on an afternoon filled with disappointment for the Tigers. TSU quarterback Cameron Rosendahl completed 17-for-26 passes for 217 yards, including a spectacular one handed catch by Steven Newbold that made Sports Center and 1 touchdown pass to wide receiver Chris Rowland. The Redshirt Senior quarterback has now climbed his way into the top-ten single season completion holders in TSU history.

The SEMO offense, was very effiecent Saturday afternoon which was bad news for the Big Blue. The Redhawks gained a total of 498 yards of net offense against the Tigers, throwing for 291 yards and the other 225 yards of that offense came curtesy on the ground as the Redhawks rushing attack proved to be too much for the Big Blue. SEMO, gained 23 first downs and also scored on 7-of-11, drives which was over 60 percent.

Individual success was limited for TSU as the injury bug has hurt the Tigers. Sophomore linebacker, Jahsun Bryant anchored the TSU defense leading the team with nine tackles, six solo, and 1 sack. Despite, such defensive success Bryant, left the game with a horrific season ending injury to his right arm.

The Tigers, will be back in action next Saturday November 9th, against the Eastern Illinois Panthers on senior night at Hale Stadium at 2 p.m.

Pumpkin Hills Offered a Family Fun Halloween Experience

0

Around this time of the year parents are usually looking for fun and safe activities for their family. One great option was to go to look at the pumpkins in the pumpkin patch. It’s something that the children love to spend time at and enjoy the fall weather and get into the spirit of the Halloween. Opened this October, Pumpkin Hills offered a family friendly way to enjoy the fall season.

Located in Mt. Juliet Pumpkin Hills was open every weekend through out the month of October. Every Saturday and Sunday there were a lot of children running around enjoying themselves.

The location had different activities taking place at the pumpkin patch like their pumpkin maze. Created by putting together a group of pumpkins, people walk through and have to find their way out. Many people got lost, taking almost an hour to escape because there are so many dead ends.

Also available was a hayride where people could see different decorations with creative pumpkins that look like spiders, webs and other spooky Halloween looks. The hayride then traveled to a pumpkin patch where people got the opportunity to pick out any pumpkin they wanted.

Ashya Canty said, “I loved taking my daughter to look at the different pumpkins and guide her through the maze.” She continued, “My daughter had the time of her life and next fall I’ll be bringing her back to Pumpkin Hills.”

Make sure to put this on your list of things to do with your family next Halloween season.
