Tennessee State’s Christion Abercrombie announces Titans’ fifth-round NFL Draft pick, a childhood friend

0

Life just seems to keep getting better for Christion Abercrombie.

The Tennessee State University linebacker, who suffered a life-threatening injury in a football game against Vanderbilt last season, stood before millions of viewers at the NFL Draft in Nashville on Saturday and announced the fifth-round pick for the Tennessee Titans – his high school friend.

The Titans selected D’Andre Walker, a linebacker from the University of Georgia, with the 168th pick on the last day of the NFL Draft.

Abercrombie, who is from Atlanta, and Walker played youth football together while growing up in Georgia.

Abercrombie called Walker after making the pick, according to the Titans.

“It was amazing, man,” said Walker of talking to his friend. “It was a blessing for the both of us.”

Calling Walker’s name in the Draft, and talking to him, are among the good moments Abercrombie has had since the Sept. 29 brain injury many thought he would not survive.

But his mother, Staci, maintained her faith, and urged others to pray, and believe that her son would get better.

“We’re expecting a miracle,” she said at a news conference a few days after Christion underwent brain surgery. “Each day is a battle. But he’s a strong young man. He’s fighting. We just have to continue to pray.”

Something miraculous started to happen. Gradually, Christion’s condition began to improve. He recently completed therapy sessions at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, and he said he’s gradually regaining his memory. He shares his mother’s strong faith.

“Believe in God, because without Him, nothing is possible,” Christion said.

TSU Athletics Director Teresa Phillips said Christion is “touching a lot of folks’ lives,” including hers.

“It really changed me because I’m more of a pessimist than an optimist,” Phillips said. “Many times we speak about miracles, but I don’t know if folks really believe they occur. However, when things like that happen, when you witness it, I believe our maker really tries to help us get something out of it.”

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Christion and his family. To donate, visit www.gofundme.com/tennessee-state-univ-athletics-dept.

News Channel 5: Exposed Part 1

Nashville Voice has reported on the saga involving Dr. Shawn Joseph, the first African American Director of Metro Nashville Public Schools, over the past six months. Our attention to the actions of certain School Board Members, parents and media personalities is driven by one simple fact: “ What you do or fail to do as a City, tells the world who and what you are more than any marketing or branding scheme, strategy or gimmick.” Our City has been divided and our true colors have bled from these tumultuous months. Yes, the MNPS Board was completely dysfunctional and some members’ actions were racist. But, the Joseph story is bigger than MNPS. Our City allowed the systemic, intentional professional and personal defamation of the highest profiled African-American leader in our City because he dared to actually bring equity to our schools and uplift Nashville students who have been historically left behind.

Nashville, we have a problem. Over the past 25 years, we have accepted the fact that thousands of Nashville children have attended schools inferior to other schools in the same School District. Dr. Joseph came to Nashville with a mandate from the School Board to eradicate inequality in our schools and bring equity of resources, talent, and policy to level the playing field. Or so we thought.

One thing history shows us is the commitment to eradicate inequity often dissipates when those benefiting from inequity see themselves lose resources in order to level the playing field. The day Dr. Joseph redistributed school resources in a more equitable way, certain Board members and parents decided he must go and they were willing to do anything, with no regard to truth, fairness, nor personal shame to get rid of him.

Now that he has reached an amicable separation from MNPS, it is important that we investigate the circumstances surrounding his departure and separate the facts from the fallacies. To this end, Nashville Voice has investigated the allegations and sources of these allegations against Shawn Joseph and the true intentions behind them because Nashville deserves the truth!

In our first installment of “News Channel 5 Exposed” we look at the reporting of false allegations against Dr. Joseph by Investigative Reporter, Phil Williams concerning Dr. Joseph.  WTVF-TV ran a story that Dr. Joseph abused his powers and violated either MNPS policy, precedent or tradition by having an employee drive him around Davidson County soon after he was hired.

Our investigation uncovered the following facts.  In 2015, former Metro Nashville Public Schools Director Jesse Register ended his tenure when the MNPS Board declined to grant a contract extension following years of low student performance, open hostility to SEIU (employees’ union) and feuds with school board members.

After Dr. Joseph arrived in Nashville, he publicly identified the historic inequality of our schools and the disparate impact on students of color. Long-time MNPS observers knew it was just a matter of time before Register would emerge with a vengeance to publicly level false claims against his successor in response. It finally happened when WTVF-TV NewsChannel 5 investigative reporter Phil Williams gave Register the opportunity to sow lies unchecked. Williams was so focused on bringing down the first African American Director of MNPS, as he did with the first Woman elected Mayor of Nashville, that he failed to corroborate Dr. Registers claims with other MNPS employees.

In January, Williams — who was struggling to keep his dwindling MNPS investigation relevant — tried to rekindle controversy about Joseph’s periodic use of employees to help shuttle him to more than 700 meetings in a community that spans more than 500 square miles.

In one of the more egregious examples of NewsChannel 5’s shoddy reporting, Williams aired a statement from Register who claimed that, when he was superintendent, “I did not use a driver.” Register added: “I always drove myself.”  From our investigation, the next day, sources at MNPS confirmed employees and school board members were laughing out loud at Register, Williams and NewsChannel 5.

“All over Bransford, you could literally hear people spitting out their coffee because they were laughing so hard,” said an MNPS source who requested anonymity for fear of retribution by NewsChannel 5, Williams, and Register. “Anyone who knows anything about this school district knows that Jesse rarely, if ever, drove himself anywhere.”

The Nashville Voice confirmed with multiple current and former school board members that Register’s statement, “I always drove myself” was false. In fact, current and former MNPS employees confirmed to Nashville Voice that he regularly leaned on MNPS employees to chauffeur him around town. Perhaps Williams should have done his due diligence before blindly handing Register the reigns on TV.

According to our sources, Register, in the final few years as superintendent, was driven around town by staff members in his office with full knowledge and no objection by those serving on the Board.

Williams also allowed Register to claim that his MNPS-owned SUVs — including a 2013 Ford Edge — were taken to the school system’s transportation garage once a week for “routine service,” implying that Register had been constantly driving all over town. In fact, we’re told by an MNPS transportation source that Register’s definition of “routine service” usually just meant an employee filling up the gas tank.

“What vehicle requires weekly maintenance?” asked our MNPS transportation source. “That TV story was just a total head-scratcher.”

If NewsChannel 5 and Williams hadn’t been biased against Joseph and MNPS, or desperate to sow controversy, they might have asked to inspect the maintenance records for Register’s Ford Edge. What they would have found, as the Nashville Voice discovered, is that Register’s SUV had exceptionally low mileage — 17,100 miles, to be exact — when it was reassigned to MNPS Interim Director Chris Henson in the summer 2015.

In other words: During Register’s last two-and-a-half years as superintendent, his SUV clocked less than 19 miles per day on average. Our takeaway: Either Register wasn’t driving himself places or he wasn’t spending much if any, time out in the schools or the community.

“It was probably a combination of both,” said a current MNPS board member. “My recollection is that Jesse mostly didn’t leave the office unless he was going to some kind of ground-breaking ceremony, or a press conference, or a meeting at the Chamber of Commerce. But when he did leave the building, usually someone else was doing the driving.”

Our great City allowed itself to be divided over Dr. Jospeh’s leadership and this division was partially caused by false allegations, innuendoes and unchecked sources giving rise to those allegations.  Dr. Joseph deserved better. Nashville deserves better.

Editor’s note: This is the first in a series of reports examining WTVF-TV NewsChannel 5 and Phil Williams’ biased coverage of Metro Nashville Public Schools.

Mark Ruffalo didn’t know Brie Larson was in a movie with him before ‘Avengers’

By Lisa Respers France, CNN

(CNN) — Spoiler alert: “Avengers: Endgame” is not the first movie in which Mark Ruffalo and Brie Larson both appear.

And if you didn’t know, it’s all good because apparently Ruffalo didn’t either.

“Entertainment Tonight” surprised the actor on the red carpet for the premiere of the new Marvel movie by sharing with him that his co-star had appeared in one of his most beloved films, “13 Going on 30,” which debuted in 2004.

“She was a mean girl,” Ruffalo said upon seeing a photo of Larson in character from the movie. “Oh my God. I didn’t know that.”

Larson reprises her role from her stand-alone movie as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in “Avengers: Endgame” and Ruffalo is back as Bruce Banner/Hulk.

The now-29-year-old actress was pretty young when she was in the movie and Ruffalo, 51, explained why he didn’t know they were in the same hit film.

“We didn’t work together,” he said.

“13 Going on 30” starred Jennifer Garner as a young girl who wakes up as an adult and reconnects with her now also adult childhood friend, played by Ruffalo.

“Avengers: Endgame” hits theaters tomorrow.

Home state allies, moderates in Congress quickly endorse Joe Biden’s bid

By Clare Foran, CNN

(CNN) — Joe Biden quickly picked up a string of endorsements from Democratic lawmakers Thursday after he formally launched his 2020 presidential campaign, with home state allies as well as moderates expressing enthusiasm in a carefully orchestrated rollout timed to the former vice president’s entry into a crowded 2020 field.

Democratic Sens. Chris Coons and Tom Carper of Delaware, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania and Doug Jones of Alabama all put out statements of support for Biden’s candidacy on Thursday morning shortly after Biden released a campaign video announcing his bid. Democratic Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester of Delaware was also quick to put out a statement endorsing Biden.

The statements highlighted Biden’s record of public service as vice president and, before that, a member of Congress himself as a Senator representing Delaware, with some lawmakers speaking highly of their own relationship and experiences working with Biden.

“Joe has spent his career championing policies that help all Americans. He is a tested, experienced leader with a proven track record of getting things done for our country,” Carper said in his statement. “I could not be more proud to endorse my friend Joe as he launches his campaign to be the next President of the United States.”

Carper and Biden served together in Delaware’s congressional delegation for nearly two decades, including almost a decade in which they served side-by-side as senators from the First State before Biden left the Senate to become Vice President.

Casey made an electability argument in his endorsement: “In order to accomplish the urgent task of defeating President Trump, Democrats must win Pennsylvania. Joe Biden can and will win Pennsylvania if he is the Democratic nominee for President.” Though Casey was re-elected last year, Trump won Pennsylvania, considered a presidential bellwether, in 2016. Biden was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Coons suggested that Biden is better positioned to handle foreign policy issues than any other Democratic contender, saying that he is “better prepared than anyone to lead America on the world stage at a time when our commitments to our allies and our values are being questioned like never before.”

Jones, who faces a tough battle for re-election in 2020 in the deep red state of Alabama, described Biden as a unifying figure, saying that he can “bring people together to find common ground.”

“The quality that makes Joe stand out is his ability to bring people together to find common ground while standing up for what he believes is right. We need to listen to each other & get things done for working people. Joe can, and will, do that. That’s why I support Joe Biden,” Jones tweeted.

‘Game of Thrones’ Episode 2 recap: Let’s all sit by the fire before we die

By AJ Willingham, CNN

(CNN) — Did you like that episode of the Game of Thrones? Did all the fireside chats and sweet moments of affection between your faves warm your heart and make you foolishly believe, even for a moment, that there may be true happiness awaiting them on the other side of this war?

Good, because we all know what happens next: PAIN, and LOTS OF IT.

Winterfell is preparing for battle. For the common folk, this involves lots of training and fighting and weapons making and giant stick-whittling, but for the main characters, it mostly means chugging fermented goat’s milk and hooking up on hay bales.

Hey, everyone’s pretty sure they’re going to die anyway.

Everyone except Daenerys, that is. What else would explain her continued preoccupation with ruling the Seven Kingdoms when there’s an entire army of dead people at her door? She’s not dense, and she’s seen the threat of the Army of the Dead firsthand, so there’s no other explanation than to assume she’s just very, very confident that the Night King is gonna be an easy win.

Even when Jon (finally!) confesses the truth — that he is her brother’s son and a legitimate Targaryen — her first thought isn’t “Wow, I’m having relations with my nephew,” it’s that Jon is now her royal competition.

Sure, the bar for incest on this show is pretty low, but it still bears consideration, ya know?

After a tense little parley, Jamie is begrudgingly welcomed at Winterfell, which gives him plenty of time to catch up with Brienne, Tyrion and The Artist Formerly Known as Bran. Bran politely refrains from telling everyone that Jaime definitely tried to kill him all those years ago. He explains that Jamie is now useful in the war to come and that, no offense, it’s pretty bold of the newly redeemed knight to assume he’s going to survive. For all his power, Bran’s social skills definitely scream “Guy Who Was Educated Inside a Tree.”

Speaking of tension, Daenerys is still at odds with Sansa, who is still just trying to figure out how to feed everyone and get a general idea of what the North is going to look like once everything is said and done. Sensible — or should we say, SANSABLE.

It’s telling that Dany has a pretty good vision of what her Iron Throne rule will look like but hasn’t given a lot of thought to the future of her nephew boo’s homeland. And just like that, their burgeoning sisterhood is quickly stalled.

Dany is also at odds with Tyrion, who either did realize Cersei would never send her army north, and lied about it to protect her, or didn’t realize she wouldn’t send her army, and is just not very smart anymore. Even though Good Guy Jorah tries to defend Tyrion and his sometimes-smartness, the rift between Dany and Tyrion is still pretty palpable.

It’s kind of ironic, since Tyrion is basically the only other character this week, in the tense minutes before war, to show any glimmer of hope for survival. After all, you can’t die at 80 with a belly full of wine and a [redacted’s] [redacted] around your [redacted] if a White Walker gets you first.

That’s how the episode ends, with Tyrion staring out between the Winterfell merlons and on the other side of the black night, the frozen members of an elderly KISS cover band staring back.

Burning questions

If Bran knows everything that has happened and is going to happen, and is the only person who can succinctly explain what the Night King wants, why does he spend most of his time waiting around in courtyards and staring at trees? We need INTEL, Bran, not gothic monologues about the persistence of memory!

Is Ghost going to do something soon or just waste the CGI budget standing there to remind people he still exists?

Are any of the main characters going to actually sit out the fight? It would be a bold move, but Gendry DID look pretty asleep and Davos IS getting pretty old…

Where are the Dothraki? Are they okay? This weather can’t be good for them. Did Davos at least get them some soup?

Melisandre, what’s up? We have a few burning questions for you specifically. No, not questions about burning. But you would be a lot of help right now.

Best line

Tyrion to Jaime: “She never fooled you. You always knew exactly who she was and you loved her anyway.”

Tyrion may be rusty in the common sense department, but he always has his loyal brother and treacherous sister’s relationship pinned perfectly. Oh sweet Jaime, the things you’ve done for love.

Worst line

Sam to Jorah: “I hope we win.”

Best scene

Jaime: “Brienne, I will knight you, giving you the dream you have always kept in your heart but never felt you could speak aloud. Let your tears fall during this truly pure and deeply emotional moment as I show you, in words and deeds, that you are worthy of honor and respect and that I would gladly die by your side as an equal and a friend.”

Tormund: “I WAS BREASTFED BY A GIANTESS.”

Ship watch

Tormund and Brienne and Jaime

Yeah, we know you love the big lady, Tormund. EVERYONE knows you love the big lady. But if you want to win the big lady you gotta give the big lady what she wants: Knighthood and some personal space!

Missandei and Grey Worm

Two of the most sensible characters on the show discuss one of the most sensible plans of action: Getting the hell out of this frozen death hole as soon as possible and going to the beach. Here’s hoping against hope that they’ll get to chase butterflies together on Naath 🙁

Arya and Gendry

HOO BOY this ship turned into a speedboat and we were NOT ready. Arya’s last look as she lay naked next to her forge buddy was an interesting one, though. Could there something else at play here?

Death count

No one…Really? No one? [checks notes] This can’t be good.

Stray observations

Okay, Cersei still IS pregnant, to the best of her brothers’ terrible knowledge.

Sam joining Bran in his musings about the fragility of human memory wasn’t just him having the sads about his dead family. It also supports a popular fan theory that Sam will survive this mess and be the one to put the whole story to parchment at the Citadel.

Also, Sam giving Ser Jorah his dead dad’s Valyrian steel sword is a nice touch. As soon as Sam stole it from his father you knew it would become important. Well, we hope it becomes important.

Podrick has a nice voice and long hair now? Who allowed this to happen?

Theon fans, you got your moment. His redemption arc is complete, and he has Sansa’s full approval. Related: Getting Sansa’s approval has somehow become a true test of merit on this show, and you can’t argue with the results.

Speaking of Sansa, she’s wearing that Littlefinger necklace again. In fact, her whole getup was very … Littlefingery. We’re not saying she’ll pick up the mantle of chaotic schemer. She’s always learned from the ones who betrayed her, so nodding to their dearly departed influences through fashion is just probably part of her “I know BS when I see it” personality.

One bold prediction

The crypt is going to be wight city

“The women and children are going to the crypt! They are going to be safe there!”

Narrator: “They are definitely not going to be safe there.”

Here are the 19 Democrats who have said they’re running for president

By Karl de Vries and Caroline Kelly, CNN

(CNN) — The 2020 Democratic field is taking shape, with candidates revealing their intentions on a seemingly everyday basis.

Here’s a look at the 19 Democrats who have thrown their hats into the ring and announced a campaign or exploratory committee. We’re going to keep updating this list through the campaign season as candidates announce their intentions or drop their bids.

Announced campaigns

Sen. Cory Booker

AGE: 49

STATE: New Jersey

KNOWN FOR: Booker, who boasts a Twitter following of more than 4 million people, gained national recognition during his tenure as Newark’s mayor, at times answering pleas to shovel residents out after major snowstorms.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg

AGE: 37

STATE: Indiana

KNOWN FOR: Known locally in South Bend, Indiana, as “Mayor Pete,” Buttigieg served as a naval officer in Afghanistan. Buttigieg, though a long shot, would be the youngest and first married gay president if elected. He would also be the first candidate to go from the mayor’s office to the presidency.

Former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro

AGE: 44

STATE: Texas

KNOWN FOR: The son of a Chicana activist, Castro served as mayor of San Antonio in 2009, focusing on education initiatives. Castro is currently the only Latino in the 2020 field, but whether he will be the only Texan will depend on former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke’s decision about making his own bid.

Former Maryland Rep. John Delaney

AGE: 55

STATE: Maryland

KNOWN FOR: A self-made businessman, Delaney at one point was the youngest CEO on the New York Stock Exchange. Delaney has been running the longest — he declared his candidacy in July 2017 — but is still working to gain name recognition.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard

AGE: 37

STATE: Hawaii

KNOWN FOR: Gabbard is the first American Samoan and the first Hindu member of Congress, and brings her experience as an Iraq War veteran to the House Armed Services Committee. But she will have to overcome obstacles both old and new, including recent internal campaign turmoil and her controversial secret meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in 2017.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand

AGE: 52

STATE: New York

KNOWN FOR: Gillibrand campaigned as a child with her grandmother Dorthea Noonan, a longtime president of the Albany Democratic Women’s Club. The New York Democrat called for former Sen. Al Franken to resign and has acknowledged her increasingly progressive stances on immigration and gun reform running counter to previous positions she held running for the House.

Sen. Kamala Harris

AGE: 54

STATE: California

KNOWN FOR: Harris is the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants and grew up attending both a Baptist church and a Hindu temple. Her progressive stances supporting Medicare-for-all and marijuana legalization could clash with her law and order history as a former California state attorney general, including her previous support of reporting arrested undocumented juveniles to ICE.

Former Gov. John Hickenlooper

AGE: 67

STATE: Colorado

KNOWN FOR: As the head of Colorado from 2011 to 2019, Hickenlooper helped steer the state through several tragedies, including the 2012 shooting in a movie theater in Aurora that left 12 people dead and catastrophic wildfires and floods in 2013. Before his two terms as governor, he served as Denver’s mayor for eight years, after opening a large brewpub there in 1988 that went on to help reinvigorate the LoDo area of Denver.

Gov. Jay Inslee

AGE: 68

STATE: Washington

KNOWN FOR: Inslee, who has held elected office for much of the last three decades, has been an outspoken progressive executive since he became governor in 2013. He has been a vocal opponent of President Donald Trump, including suing the President after he tried to ban immigration from several Muslim-majority countries. Now, Inslee is running as the climate change candidate.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar

AGE: 58

STATE: Minnesota

KNOWN FOR: Klobuchar announced her run outdoors as it snowed, which she tied to her commitment to a “homegrown” campaign with “grit.” The Minnesota moderate is looking to work across the aisle and win back fellow working class midwesterners.

Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam

AGE: 44

STATE: Florida

KNOWN FOR: The child of Jamaican immigrants, Messam is a first-generation American who holds progressive views on immigration, guns and the environment. He was part of a group that sued the state of Florida in 2018 over a law that restricted his ability to create municipal gun regulations after he wanted a new amphitheater in his city to be a “gun-free venue.”

Rep. Seth Moulton

AGE: 40

STATE: Massachusetts

KNOWN FOR: Moulton, a Marine Corps veteran, raised his national profile after trying and failing to prevent Rep. Nancy Pelosi from reclaiming the speaker’s gavel. He later voted for her after Democrats retook the House last year. Moulton’s longshot bid is expected to focus heavily on veterans’ issues and national security. If elected, he would be the youngest president in American history.

Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke

AGE: 46

STATE: Texas

KNOWN FOR: O’Rourke, a rising star in the Democratic Party, ran unsuccessfully for a Senate seat in 2018 while serving his third term in the House. With roots in El Paso, O’Rourke gained national attention during his Senate race when a video of him answering a question about NFL players kneeling during the National Anthem went viral. He made an off-the-cuff riff about the civil rights movement as he defended players for making their case “nonviolently, peacefully, while the eyes of this country are watching.”

Rep. Tim Ryan

AGE: 45

STATE: Ohio

KNOWN FOR: Ryan, whose district includes Youngstown, Ohio, enters the presidential race as a longshot candidate with less name recognition than most candidates and a far smaller political network. He has become most known in Democratic circles for his opposition to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi retaining her leadership positions, though he later voted for her when Democrats elected her speaker earlier this year.

Sen. Bernie Sanders

AGE: 77

STATE: Vermont

KNOWN FOR: Sanders’ democratic socialist platform gained significant traction during the 2016 primaries, when the independent senator who caucuses with Democrats ran against Hillary Clinton. His policy agenda includes various progressive proposals, many of which have been embraced by the Democratic Party, like expanding health care, broadening the social safety net and making higher education free.

Rep. Eric Swalwell

AGE: 38

STATE: California

KNOWN FOR: The Democrat who represents California’s 15th Congressional District enters the race as a long-shot candidate in a crowded field. A frequent critic of the Trump administration, Swalwell has raised his profile by becoming a staple on cable television. He has focused on combating gun violence, and traveled to Iowa in December with Cameron Kasky, who’s a survivor of the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and a co-founder of March for Our Lives.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren

AGE: 69

STATE: Massachusetts

KNOWN FOR: Warren was appointed as assistant to President Barack Obama and special adviser to the Treasury secretary in order to launch the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. She was also appointed to a congressional oversight panel overseeing the $700 billion Trouble Assets Relief Program that was passed in response to the 2008 financial crisis.

Spiritual author Marianne Williamson

Decided not to run

Sen. Sherrod Brown (took himself out of consideration on March 7, 2019)

AGE: 66

STATE: Ohio

KNOWN FOR: A liberal populist, Brown won three terms in Ohio, a state that has been trending Republican in recent years. Brown would’ve offered Democrats a candidate who could reconnect with voters in the Midwest. Before deciding not to run, he had embarked on a “listening tour” that included stops in the four key early voting states in the 2020 primary.

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg (took himself out of consideration on March 5, 2019)

AGE: 77

STATE: New York

KNOWN FOR: Bloomberg hinted at a run for months before deciding against it. He had portrayed himself as a moderate against progressive projects such as Medicare-for-all but with extensive experience and campaign funds to put toward key Democratic issues such as climate change and gun control.

Former Attorney General Eric Holder (took himself out of consideration on March 4, 2019)

AGE: 68

STATE: New York

Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (took himself out of consideration on April 17, 2019)

AGE: 62

STATE: Virginia

KNOWN FOR: McAuliffe previously served as governor of Virginia and chairman of the Democratic National Committee and has an extensive fundraising network. He opted instead to help coordinate the campaigns of Virginia’s local and national Democratic lawmakers “to make sure that we are blue” for 2020.

How to Help Kids Develop Healthy Dental Habits

0

(StatePoint) Copying adult behavior is a part of childhood development. While you may not always love it when your child repeats everything you say, when it comes to healthy dental habits, you can use this to your advantage.

“It’s easier to teach a younger child good oral health habits than to break an older child of poor ones. Encourage your children to take good care of their teeth by showing them how well you take care of your own,” says Dr. Michael Hahn, a licensed dentist and Cigna’s national dental director. “Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic diseases among children in the U.S., but it is also largely preventable.”

To help instill good dental health habits in children, Dr. Hahn suggests parents and guardians lead by example in the following ways:

• Go for regular dental checkups: More than one third of adults in the U.S. ages 18 to 64 failed to visit the dentist at least once in 2016, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Set a good example so that children don’t skip dental exams when they become adults. Make family appointments for everyone to visit the dentist for checkups and routine cleanings. Be positive when talking about it with children, even if you harbor your own anxieties about dental care. Consider the alternative: when you skip regular dental checkups and cleanings, it becomes more likely that a small problem will grow larger and become more expensive to treat.

• Eat breakfast together: A healthy breakfast can set the tone for a healthy day and may even reduce one’s cravings for sugary snacks later. Sugary and sticky snacks can remain on teeth for hours, providing time for bacteria and acids to begin causing their damage, leading to tooth decay. Beyond breakfast, you can set a good example by packing tooth-friendly healthful lunches with fruits and vegetables for yourself and your children.

• Drink water: Making water your household’s go-to beverage will also help limit your family’s exposure to sugary alternatives. It can also provide an ongoing way to rinse your teeth between meals and after snacks, to limit the length of time food particles remain on the teeth.

• Brush and floss: Follow the American Dental Association recommendations found on their website for brushing twice a day for two minutes each time and flossing at least once daily. Don’t just remind your children to brush their teeth, join them on occasion so that they can see that it can be fun. Incorporating a two-minute timer as part of the ritual can make it more of a game.

More tips for families can be found at cigna.com/dental.

You can be a great role model for your children when it comes to dental health. With a positive attitude, you can help your kids form healthy habits that last a lifetime, which in turn will help them keep their teeth for their lifetime.
