End of an Era: TSU Leaves Southern Heritage Classic, Starts New Tradition

Tennessee State University (TSU) alum and Memphis native Dominique Cooper grew up with the Southern Heritage Classic. For him, and many others, it was more than just a football game—it was a tradition.

“As a Memphian, I’ve been attending the Southern Heritage Classic since I was a kid,” Cooper said. “It was always fun, and everyone looked forward to it. Traffic down East Parkway used to be crazy—Midtown residents hated it—but it was always a great time in Memphis, win or lose.”

For over 30 years, TSU faced off against longtime rival Jackson State University in the Southern Heritage Classic, drawing thousands of fans to Memphis each year. But after more than three decades, TSU has decided to move on. The university and Southern Heritage Classic officials couldn’t agree on a deal, leading to TSU’s withdrawal.

In 2023 and 2024, after Jackson State ended its participation in the Classic, TSU played the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) instead. Now, with TSU officially stepping away, the Classic will have to continue without the Tigers.

While the football game was the highlight, the Classic’s impact extended far beyond the field. The event fostered a strong sense of community among Black fans and alumni while also providing a significant economic boost to Memphis. Visitors from across the country filled hotels, attended events, and brought millions of dollars into the local economy.

TSU’s absence will undoubtedly be felt, but with every ending comes a new beginning. In this case, TSU is launching a fresh chapter alongside Alabama A&M. Beginning with the 2025 season, the two schools will introduce the Legacy Series, alternating games between Nashville and Huntsville, Alabama. The inaugural game will take place on September 13, 2025, in Nashville.

Some alumni are optimistic about what this new tradition could bring. “If they do it right, it could generate a lot of revenue for the school,” said TSU alum Portia Tharpe. “It’s an opportunity to win because it will bring more visibility to TSU.”

One door has closed with TSU’s departure from the Southern Heritage Classic, but another has opened. The memories will remain, and now, a new tradition begins with the Legacy Series.
